If you can get it.
And I got it.
But like all good things, it had to come to an end someday.
So it was with mixed feelings that I decided to step down from the editor’s job here at the Mechanicsville Local, and look around for something new.
Working here for a couple decades, first as a photographer, then as a photographer/reporter and finally as editor has been great.
I’ve been telling my friends for years now that somehow, someone designed a special continuing adult education course just for me, where I could go about meeting all kinds of interesting folks.
I got to talk to them and take some photos and then head back to the office, where I developed the photos and wrote about what I learned.
Over the years the job has taught me a few things.
Number one, people are generally okay.
Maybe I can’t go quite as far as comedian and folklorist Will Rogers, who supposedly said he never met a man he didn’t like.
But I think I can say I’ve never met a person who wasn’t worth knowing, or one who didn’t have a story that was worth hearing.
And maybe retelling in the pages of the Local.
Second, there are a lot of good things going on in Hanover, and by extension, anywhere else one might go.
The volunteer workers, the conscientious public servants, the teachers, the cops, the fire and rescue workers, the community service organizations, the individuals – I could go on. I’ve always been impressed by the steady undercurrent of service that goes on in this community, and I would guess, in most others.
I think it goes under reported in this day and age, and I hope we’ve done our part here at the Local to shine some light on the good news.
Third, there’s some bad stuff going on too, as we all know.
Sitting in on a few murder trials, for instance, will sober one’s outlook on the human condition, that’s for sure. But taken all together, the positive outweighs the negative in my view.
That’s the big lesson working here at the Local has taught me.
It’s changed my outlook on life, I kid you not.
So in the very near future, another editor will be pounding the keyboard in my place, hounding local officials for news, and in general making a nuisance of themselves, all the while having a good time like I have, I trust.
I know the good folks of Hanover will welcome him or her.
And just to keep my hand in, I’ll be around for awhile to help out with an occasional story or photo if needed.
Like I said, it’s nice work.
