Pothole monster might swallow your vehicle

Returning to Mechanicsville from Ashland the other day served as a reminder of learning to drive.

If you can maneuver the twists and turns — and hills — of West Virginia, you can drive just about anywhere. A friend who relocated to Southern California found that to be true the first time she found herself in eight lanes of traffic.

What we are facing these days, however, comes in the form of a road beast, also known as the pothole.

Arriving in Virginia in 2005 meant fewer two-lane curvy roads and what originally seemed to be well maintained highway systems. Well, it didn’t take long to discover the cries for transportation funds were becoming more vocal. The need is there, the want is there — but where is the money? Interstates 295, 95 and 64 have taken on an obstacle course appearance.

Years ago, a hurried driver (who shall remain anonymous — OK, yes, it was this writer) came around a curve when — bam — the right front tire fell victim to a pothole. It wasn’t a pretty scene.

The depth of some of the potholes in and around Hanover County could do some serious damage to a vehicle.

With the state suffering budgetary woes and the additional — and unexpectedly high — costs of more snow removals than usual in a winter here, can the Virginia Department of Transportation look toward repairing potholes that almost take on a sinkhole appearance?!

As the General Assembly continues its session, let’s hope monies can be located to take care of our education, public safety and transportation needs. That’s not to diminish the significance and importance of other services, but our leaders are now being forced to take a serious look at all sources and expenses.

While Hanover County leaders proceed with school district and government budgets, we also hope the state can loosen its purse strings to help a system that has been forced to take on more fiscal responsibility.

Oh, and watch where you’re driving: A pothole might get you.

Try hiring more help in to work out on the road instead of in the offices or contracting it out. WAKE UP!!!! WE have more roads & less help.
