Salute to a public servant
Ken Odor
Dec 11, 2007

Last week I wrote an article on outgoing Mechanicsville district supervisor Jack Ward’s career.
I’ve known Jack for almost 20 years and have gotten used to him being one of those to go to for comment on things Mechanicsville.
Of course that won’t change, we’ll still seek Ward’s input occasionally on the issues of the day, even as Debbie Coats take over his duties on the board of supervisors
What struck me most during my talk with Jack was the extent of his involvement in the community.
Committees, commissions, volunteer work above and beyond his duties on the board of supervisors.
It’s that same kind of commitment by so many in the community that makes the area such a great place to live and work.
It’s just another reminder of all the good that goes on day in and day out by civic minded citizens who want to make their neighborhoods, schools and county a better place.
Mechanicsville and Hanover are fortunate to have so many hard-working people willing to donate their time to the public good.
And it has been one of the greatest lessons I have learned working for this newspaper, to realize the steady undercurrent of positive activity that goes on here, often going unreported.
Some might call such sentiments “boosterism,” but I think not.
It’s just small bits and pieces of “the news” that don’t always get reported in the larger media, which tend to focus more on “bigger” stories.
Anyway, thanks Jack, for all your service.
