Whether or not the Board of Supervisors should approve zoning for eight Habitat for Humanity homes in the Brown Grove area has become a hot topic.
This week’s Local includes a letter on this page from Col. Stuart Cook, with his reasons for opposing the clustering of such houses in a particular neighborhood, along with other of his concerns for the future development of Hanover.
The Sheriff includes some pretty convincing statistics to bolster his argument that granting the zoning might result in a heavier load on law enforcement, and the county should consider the points he raises carefully before making a decision.
Some may not agree with Cook’s views. But the fact that the Sheriff raises these issues should surprise no one.
When one is in the business of law enforcement, calling attention to factors that may increase the likelihood of criminal activity goes with the territory, and Col. Cook has always done so directly and without apology.
That’s part of his job.
