Voting makes you part of the solution
Melody Kinser Vote. Those four letters make a word that may be little in size but are big in impact. On Tuesday, you have the opportunity to make a difference by going to the polls. This privilege we enjoy cannot be taken lightly. It is our right, it is our responsibility to cast our ballot. Simply put, by doing so, we become part of the solution in the direction our country, state and county take. Based on the number of letters to the editor we received heading into the Nov. 8 General Election, there is indeed great interest in the course of Hanover County. Most endorsements for candidates have been in support of the Board of Supervisors seats. As a matter of fact, our letters… Read more...

We are blessed to have caring neighbors here
Melody Kinser Velma Holmes and her family recently did something that should serve as an example to all of us about making a difference in our communities. We first learned of her incredible act of kindness in a letter to the editor that appeared in last week’s edition. After receiving a letter from her neighbors in Dogwood Knoll, she and her family submitted a letter of thanks. Then it was time to get the interview. She came by the office last Tuesday and it was, to say the least, a great pleasure to meet someone so genuine, compassionate and caring. Her story appears on today’s front page. While we often hear about and read about stories of illness, how many of us actually take… Read more...

If you have high speed Internet, be grateful
Melody Kinser Several years ago, I wrote a column about being spoiled by conveniences. That holds true today. While attending the Oct. 5 public meeting hosted by the High Speed Internet Committee, the reality of how dependent we are on the latest technologies — and that we should expect those services — hit home. Fortunately, I have a service provider that enables me to connect at a decent speed without worries or delays. Listening to some of the residents’ concerns reminded me of the early days of “the world wide web” and uploading news content at the end of a shift. It was the early 1990s and that meant dial-up. I can still hear that squeal as the attempt… Read more...

Take the time to thank a firefighter
Melody Kinser We know they’re there. We know what they do. We know they put their lives on the line for us. But do we take the time to thank them? They are firefighters — and we should express our appreciation to them whenever possible. Fire Prevention Week kicked off on Sunday and continues through Saturday. This year’s theme is “It’s Fire Prevention Week! Protect Your Family from Fire!” As Hanover County residents, we are blessed to have so many dedicated career and volunteer firefighters protecting us. According to the National Fire Prevention Association, Fire Prevention Week “was established to commemorate the Great Chicago Fire,… Read more...

Melody Kinser If you have issues with Internet access/service, then make a point to attend — and participate — in a Town Hall event this evening at the Mechanicsville Library. Hosted by Hanover County’s High Speed Internet Committee and the Hanover Association of Businesses and Chamber of Commerce, the public meeting will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the library at 7461 Sherwood Crossing Place in Mechanicsville. A similar comment session was conducted Monday evening at The Montpelier Center for Arts & Education. This is your opportunity to express your thoughts, concerns and “wish list” when it comes to the high speed Internet service in your particular… Read more...

HABCC embodies community spirit
Melody Kinser While the organization’s emphasis is obviously business, don’t let the name Hanover Association of Businesses and Chamber of Commerce deceive you. Thanks to strong members and a dedicated staff, this group is integral to the ongoing success we enjoy in Hanover County. Listening to what has been accomplished, as well as goals, during last Wednesday’s Annual Dinner and Membership Meeting left this writer feeling good about this place we call home. There is a true spirit of community in the words and deeds of the people involved in the HABCC. Helping the small business owner and helping the county administration attract “the big guys” appear to be equal… Read more...

We should brag about our county
Melody Kinser Some may say this writer is a cheerleader when it comes to singing the praises of those who deserve such recognition. I’m OK with that. Last week, two examples served as reminders of why Hanover County is a great place to call home. During the Sept. 14 regular meeting of the Hanover County Board of Supervisors, Col. David Hines of the Sheriff’s Office and Chief Fred Crosby of Fire/EMS reported on the efforts of government staff when Hurricane Irene rolled through our community. The teamwork and concern for residents were so impressive — and heart-warming. It’s good to know we live in a county where neighbors helping neighbors still exists. More… Read more...
