Hanover Courthouse - where it all started
Tue. Jun 24, 2008

Photos by Bridget Hazel

Visitors to historic Hanover County Courthouse got a special treat last Saturday as re-enactors portrayed the famous Parsons Cause case, regarded by many historians as the opening shot of the American Revolution.

The case revolved around the payment of clergymen in Virginia, who appealed directly to the King of England when their salaries were reduced by the Virginia House of Burgesses.

Above, Patrick Henry, portrayed by Mike Wells of Virginia Patriots, Inc., makes an impassioned defense against the Plaintiff.

According to the Parsons Cause Foundation, Patrick Henry called the King a tyrant and and maintained he no longer merited the obedience of the people.

At left, Hanover County’s Sheriff Tompkins, portrayed by Steve Hawkins and looking appropriately stern, keeps the court in order.
