Both Hanover Country girls’ tennis teams Atlee and Lee-Davis defeated their regional quarterfinal opponents to advance to Thursday’s semifinal round.

Host Atlee swept past Colonial Height 5-0 while Lee-Davis knocked off host Prince George 5-3.

In a contest that took less than an hour to decide, Atlee got strong performances across the board, dominating the visiting Colonials from the opening serve. Only two sets got closer than 6-1.

“Our girls played well,” said Atlee head coach Duke Price. “Colonial Heights is a pretty good team too so I was glad to see our girls’ were on their game.”

At No. 1 Yasmin Fotovat continued her exemplary play, defeating M. Jones 6-0, 6-1 in the longest competed match of the day. Shao-Ching Tu and Loren Shugrue also won by the similar margins playing at No. 3 and No. 6. Tu defeated K. Barnes 6-1, 6-1 and Shugrue took out A. Braithwaite, 6-1, 6-0.

“I think we’re playing really well,” Shugrue said. “Everyone’s just playing the strongest that they’ve been playing.”

The closest matches of the day were played at No. 2 and No. 4. Rebekah Ferguson, Atlee’s No. 2 defeated J. Akeers 6-0, 6-2 while teammate Christina Shifflett defeated M. Garcia 6-2, 6-1 at No. 4.

The No. 5 match between the Raiders’ Shannon Heard and L. Shortlidge was halted when Atlee took the winning margin in points. At the time, Heard led, 6-0, 4-2.

With the win, Atlee advances to the regional semifinals for the second straight year. The Raiders will take on Mills Godwin a team that they handed them one of their two losses (7-2) during the regular season.

Though his team lost 2-7 in the prior meeting, Price likes the way his Raiders are playing. “I’m feeling good,” he said. “Anything can happen in tennis and it doesn’t matter if they’ve won before. We’ve got to prove it on the court.”

Even though they will be taking on the region’s top ranked team, Shugrue said don’t count out the Raiders. “I think it’s going to be a close match and if everyone is playing their best there’s a chance we can make it,” she said.

In another quarterfinal involving the Capital District runner-up, Lee- Davis held off Prince George 5-3 to advance to the semis. At No. 1 singles, Julia Vilardell defeated the Royals’ Elizabeth Walsh 6-3, 6-4, and in No. 5 singles, Lee-Davis’ Brittany Manning held off Heather Lewis 7-6 (8-6), 7-6 (7-4).

In No. 2 doubles, Olivia Davis and Angelina Sportelli defeated Prince George’s Katy Cash and Cara Lucy 7-6 (8-6), 6-1.

On Thursday afternoon at 3 p.m. Atlee will play Mills Godwin in the semifinals at the Raintree Swim and Racquet Club off located Quioccasin Road in Richmond.

Also playing in the regional semifinals on Thursday at 3 p.m., Lee-Davis take on Deep Run at Mills Godwin.
