Hanover High School hosted girls’ gymnastics teams from Atlee, Lee-Davis, Patrick Henry and Goochland in the Hannover Quad last Wednesday. For the teams it was the final regular-season meet before district/regional competition, which will also take place at Hanover on Saturday, Feb. 7.
The master of ceremonies took time to honor corsage-toting graduates-to-be from each of the teams, including Hanover all-arounder Maura Seelmann, who was unfortunately also adorned with a fresh ice pack on her knee after taking a fall in vault warm-up.
The injury bug had also bitten Lee-Davis tumblers with Samantha Schools and Hannah Chenault, both nursing her lower leg injuries, but Coach Cy Witherow expected them to be available by this weekend.
However, on a brighter note, Sarah Wright was all smiles after sticking a perfect landing on her full-twist vault. Her 8.8 score led the Confederates.
“Sarah’s really come along,” Witherow said. “Her vault has gotten cleaner and cleaner, and we can probably even pick that up by another tenth or two.”
Lisa Calton’s fourth best all-around performance highlighted the Lee-Davis team, which finished second with 125.5 points.
Hanover took third with a 117.575 total. Hannah Andrzejewski led the Hawks in all four events, and walked away with third best all-around. Her 8.4 floor routine edged teammate Amy Waters for fifth-place by .05.
Patrick Henry, still dealing with injuries, competed with only six gymnasts.
“Our three top all-arounders aren’t doing all the events tonight,” Patriots’ coach Susan Severin said. “Basically we’re just saving our energy for regionals now – I don’t want them to get hurt any more than they are.”
Suraya Bradshaw missed the Quad, and Lizzie Powell limited her participation to uneven bars, where she led her team with an 8.2. Haley Sellers’ 8.35 on the balance beam also highlighted the Patriots’ performance and took third best in category.
PH took fourth in the event with a team score of 83.425.
Goochland High’s lone tumbler Annie Dankos had an 8.0 on the vault, but fell just short of what she needed to qualify for single-A district/regional competition.
Not surprisingly, Atlee dominated the event, sweeping first and second in all four categories on the way to a 141.6 team victory.
Sophomore Cameron Overstreet put an exclamation point on a nearly flawless uneven bar routine with a spectacular double-back dismount and flawless landing.
“I’m really excited about the bars tonight,” Overstreet said. “I haven’t stuck a real dismount like that in a long time.”
That may be hard to believe for those familiar with Overstreet’s typical mastery – but the best was yet to come. Her pike-tsukahara vault a few minutes later scored an event-best 9.6.
Caitlin Donahue marked in the high eights in three-out-of-four events to take second all-around. Brianna Mackay (vault, floor) and Jessica Nunnally (uneven bars) also scratched scores in the nines.
With high marks and consistency across the board in recent competitions, the “Raider Machine” appears to be well stocked and operating at full-throttle as district/regional competition approaches.
“They’re going to be tough to beat anytime they have a meet like they had tonight,” Witherow said.
