After three days of rain delays, the Capital District tennis tournaments finally got into full swing on Thursday afternoon at Lee-Davis and Varina High Schools.

At Varina, the district girls’ managed to get in some early doubles matches on Wednesday before rain closed down the courts. Yesterday afternoon, the teams returned to the courts at 4:30 with the determination of getting in as many matches as possible. The matches did not conclude until nearly 10:30 p.m.

In singles, No. 1 seed Atlee’s Yasmin Fotovat advanced and will face No. 2 seed Julia Vilardell of Lee-Davis in the singles championship on Friday evening. Both players advanced to the quarterfinal round via bye.

In quarterfinal action, Fotovat, who entered the competition undefeated, took out Lee-Davis’ Kelley Cattoi in straight sets 6-0, 6-0. Fotovat’s semifinal match against Henrico’s did not get started until after 8 p.m. but with similar results, Fotovat winning 6-1, 6-0.

Vilardell advanced to the semifinals after defeating last year’s district runner-up, Rebekah Ferguson of Atlee 6-2, 7-5 (7-5). Vilardell then reached the championship match by beating Varina’s Ashley Milo 6-1, 6-1.

In doubles, Fotovat and Shao-Ching Tu advanced to the semifinals by defeating Lee-Davis’ Olivia Davis and Angelina Sportelli 6-0, 6-1. Altee’s Christina Shifflett and Ferguson also reached the semis with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Lee-Davis’ Vilardell and Cattoi.

Only one other quarterfinal doubles match was completed, in which Hanover’s Kaitlyn Whitaker and Ellie Grove defeated Henrico’s Jasmins Chopra and Valerie Weterman 6-0, 6-0.

The doubles championships will be determined this afternoon following the conclusion of the semifinal matchups.

In Capital District boys’ action, Atlee’s Shao-wei Tu advanced to face Henrico’s Arjun Venkatasubramanian in the championship match which will be played Saturday morning at Lee-Davis.

Tu reaches the title game for the second consecutive year and advanced by beating Henrico’s Zimmerman in the quarterfinals 7-6, retired. In the semifinals, Tu took out Lee-Davis’ Kyle Russell 6-3, 6-0.

Venkatasubramanian reached the championship match via a quarterfinal win over Atlee’s Cody Cox 6-2, 6-1. In the semifinals, Venkatasubramanian defeated the three-time defending champion, Hanover’s Jacob Bean, 6-3, 6-3.

Doubles action will resume at Lee-Davis on Friday afternoon.
