Hanover pinned the competition at the Capital District wrestling tournament at Lee-Davis Saturday, taking seven of the nine titles its wrestlers competed for.
The Hawks, who scored 40 points more than second-place Lee-Davis, 250.5-209, will send a total of 12 wrestlers to the Central Region tournament. The Confederates will send 11 wrestlers to the regional, while Atlee, which finished fourth with 148.5 points, will send six wrestlers into postseason play.
The Raiders finished behind Varina. The Blue Devils scored 162 points, but will likewise send six wrestlers to the regional tournament.
A number of the wrestlers, like Hanover sophomore Michael Flora, earned their first district championship. Flora claimed his medal by defeating Henrico’s Kyle Hutson in a 6-2 decision for the 112-pound title.
“It feels really good. Yep, it’s a good experience,” Flora said of his win. He had to work for his win, though, as he trailed going into the final round. “I was kind of worried, but I didn’t let that get to me. I just wrestled like I always do and tried to come back.”
In addition to Flora, Hanover will send district champions Paul Eubank (119 pounds), Connor Harrison (125 pounds), Gabe LaVey (130 pounds), Tanner Tinsley (152 pounds), Shreve Rohle (160 pounds) and Patrick Sorey (189 pounds). Other Hawks who qualified for the Central Region tournament are Michael Engels (140-pound runner up), Henry Reeves (215-pound runner up), Joe Jarrells (third place in the 130-pound division), Landon Casstevens (third place, 171 pounds) and Josh Hutto (third place, 289 pounds).
Lee-Davis sends champions Randy Loving (171-pounds), Calvin Davis (215 pounds) and Brandon Robinson (289 pounds). Other Confederates going to the region tournament include runners-up Collin Van Allen (125 pounds), Trey Baldwin (145 pounds) and Aaron Bolden (152 pounds); and third-place finishers Tyler Wooten (103 pounds), Sawyer Barksdale (112 pounds), Reid Hues (119 pounds), Mark Reisenweaver (135 pounds) and Eain Shores (160 pounds).
Robinson earned what was arguably the biggest upset of the day. Even though he weighs 215 pounds, he went up against Atlee’s Ramirez, who better fits the 289-pound classification. Rather than be intimidated by the size difference, he said he just went on the attack—moving fast, staying low, pushing Ramirez hard and keeping him off balance. His smile after the award ceremony said better than any words how much he appreciated the win.
Atlee sends champions Dillon Knight (130 pounds) and Will Hays (140 pounds); runners-up Sloan Lennon (103 pounds), Isaac Mackey (171 pounds) and Mario Ramirez (289 pounds); third-place finisher Eli Williams (125 pounds) and fourth-place finishers Justin White (135 pounds) and James Ramser (189 pounds).
Atlee’s Hays, a 140-pound senior, earned his first district title. Even though he defeated his opponent, Engels 15-9, it was a tough match after a long day of wrestling.
“[Engels] was really strong, and he has really good endurance,” Hays said. “So I guess it was just who kept going harder.”
Although most of the matches went the distance, some ended quickly. The quickest end to a championship-round match was in the 125-pound division. Hanover’s Harrison pinned Van Allen of Lee-Davis in 1:45.
“I just went out there and did my thing, went out tough,” Harrison said. “I knew I needed to win the match—this is my last shot since I’m a senior—so I went out and got it done. … I didn’t want to be in that match for long. I just wanted to get it over, so I did it.”
Two more Hawk victories were by pins. LaVey pinned Varina’s Paul Gregory in 4:47 in the 135-pound title match; and Tinsley pinned Confederate Bolden in 4:25.
In another dominating performance, Atlee’s Knight won a 13-1 decision over Varina’s Nicholas Machupa. But even though the Raiders’ senior could get Machupa down, he couldn’t keep him down.
“I was aggressive the hole time,” Knight said. “It was hard to finish and pin him. He was pretty good at defending most of my moves. I guess I got in deep on him some times—I got some turns, some nice tilts and stuff, but he did a good job of staying off his back.”
For Hanover’s LaVey, a senior, a district title is nice, but he’s won them before. His desire is concentrated on a win in the regional and the state tournament.
“It’s nice that I won [the district title] in my last year,” LaVey said. “But I’m really looking forward to the next two weeks. Those are the ones I want.”
In Colonial District action, Patrick Henry finished 6th with 122 points.
In the 215 championship, the Patriots Walker fell to Deep Run’s 9-1.
