Cheatham’s 4 TDs help Hanover slip past Lee-Davis

A pouring rain did little to dampen the offensive fireworks between two teams desperately in need of a victory. But by the fourth quarter, it was Hanover High’s Deane Cheatham carrying the pile, and his team, to a 40-38 victory against visiting Lee-Davis.

Cheatham finished with four touchdowns and 209 allpurpose yards, doing his best to keep pace with Lee-Davis quarterback Phillip Gardner, who had four TDs along with 359 passing yards.

The junior running back saved his biggest carries for the fourth quarter. Most of the crowd had departed — even the band was long gone — but there was Cheatham pushing people around in short sleeves. He said that the long sleeves affected his ability to protect the ball but that he was aided by new cleats, which he picked up Thursday night in anticipation of a sloppy field.

With the victory, the Hawks moved to 3-3 after a rough start.

“We wanted to come out here and show people we could still play football,” Cheatham said.

The game opened with strong defensive play, as the Hawks’ Xavier Crocker intercepted a pass on the 1-yard line as the Confederates were about to score. Lee-Davis repaid the favor when Will Connerley broke up an option play and forced a fumble that led to the game’s first score.

After that, all was quiet on the offensive front until a 45-yard pass from Hanover’s Sam Rogers found Cheatham for a touchdown. Lee-Davis again had an answer, in the form of an 82-yard touchdown pass from Gardner to Justin Becker.

In the third quarter the offenses continued to have their way, with the teams scoring on four of their first five possessions.

The Hawks had the last two scores, with Cheatham crossing the goal line to push the team into the lead for the first time.

With the Hawks up by nine points late, Gardner led the Confederates on a touchdown drive. But they scored with 7 seconds left and were unable to collect the onside kick.

That left Lee-Davis at 3-3, with their losses against quality teams. It was Hanover that got to party, as the few dozen students who remained swarmed the field to celebrate with the team.

“This was a huge win,” Rogers said. “If we didn’t win this one, we weren’t going to the playoffs.”

Another game lost, like Varina, which should have been won and yes this lost is solely on the coaches too.  I feel sorry for the Lee Davis players.  These kids play their tails off with the worst coaching I have ever seen.  It is hard to believe these coaches ever coached anywhere before (coached @ Highland Springs – what a joke).

They are way better coaches then what Lee-Davis had before, But I agree they should’ve beat Varina and Hanover. Good Luck against us this friday L-D -springer football player.

Those coaches had NO problem being part of a winning team at HSHS. Maybe it’s the players not performing.

Obviously Robert has not been to any of Lee Davis games.  Come to a game and see for yourself before you assume the players are not performing.

Cheatham had 301 all purpose yards, 262 yards rushing on 18 carries, just letting you know.

I guess I was too short on my response. The coach can only put the players in position to make plays. If the kids don’t make the pays,it’s not the coaches fault. A kid(Cheatham) racking up those kind of numbers tells me that someone is not making plays. I’ll get to see for myself Friday night when the C-Feds travel to play the coaches former team at HSHS.

These kids from Lee-Davis our making plays, Phillip Gsrdner led the region with his performance 256 yds and 4 touchdowns, and their reciever Justin Becker had 220 yds and 2 Td’s.

Correction: Phillip Gardner had 356 yds

I mean, the defense is NOT making plays. The coach can only put the players in the right place. He can’t make the tackle for them. The defensive kids are not making plays!

WIN as a TEAM-LOOSE as a TEAM. That game is over.BOTH TEAMS PLAYED HARD!! LETS FOCUS on winning the next 4. ALL THE TEAM MEMBERS AND COACHES NEED THE SUPPORT FROM THE LD COMMUNITY. THESE KIDS ARE WORKING THEIR BUTTS OFF. LETS GET BEHIND THEM FOR THE REMAINING SEASON!!!! I AM SURE WE ARE NOT PERFECT AT OUR JOBS EITHER!!!!

Robert Cosner.. you have no idea what you are talking about. You have NO IDEA. Lee Davis defense is better than any team you every coached or played on. that is if you know anything about football and are just one of those ignorant people who act sweet and think they know everything.

Let’s just wait and see how things go,and enjoy the rest of the season. The kids and coaches are doing their best, and that’s all anyone can ask of them.

Let’s stop tiptoeing around the facts every one of Cheatham scores was down the weak side of LD defense. Hanover coaches could see it and continued to run the same plays.  I have no idea why LD coaches could not see this and make the changes.

In my professional opinion John Alexander and the rest of the defense plays with the heart and determination that I could appreciate on my very own team. But contrary to their hard play, Phillip Gardner is an absolute scrub. Hey phil this isnt stonewall anymore. Go C-FEDS! Give it to Atlee!
