Notes:
Injury big bites Confederates
It’s been a frustrating season so far at Lee-Davis, whose lineup has been significantly impacted by a series of injuries and illnesses to its top wrestlers.
Buoyed by junior Calvin Davis’ first-place finish at 215, the Confederates managed to place 14th out of 34 teams at last weekend’s Free Lance-Star Super 32 tournament in Fredericksburg despite the absence of five starters.
Still, fourth-year coach Tom Riley is trying hard not to waste time thinking about what might’ve been.
“We’re coming to the end of the season, and we still haven’t been able to put our starting 14 on the mat at the same time,” Riley said.
With four returning state qualifiers, Riley believes the Confederates can make some noise if brothers Don and Anthony Lineberry, Taylor Griggs and Taylor Eastman can make it back to full strength in time for the postseason.
Road Warriors get it done
The Richmond-area contingent certainly made its presence felt at the Free Lance-Star Super 32, placing wrestlers in half of the 14 finals and winning six titles. Varina’s Shawn Crawley (112), Hanover’s Gabe LaVey (135) and Ben Wilson (152) and Matoaca’s duo of Blake Roulo (140) and Josh Clark (145) joined Lee-Davis’ Calvin Davis as champions.
Hanover’s Kyle Locke reached the final at 189, falling to Fluvanna’s Willy Crawford.
Three local wrestlers also placed in the top six at the Mount Mat Madness tournament\ hosted by Baltimore’s Mount St. Joseph High. James River’s Ryan Powis continued his terrific season by winning his first three matches to reach the semifinals at 285, but he lost to eventual champion Bobby
Telford of St. Mark’s and wound up fifth.
Hopewell brothers Cody and Clint Allala also advanced to the semifinals at 152 and 171, respectively. Both finished in sixth place.
