Jaime MacKay had to suffer the embarrassment of having her father taking pictures of her in public yesterday. But she shouldn’t have been embarrassed why.

  The Atlee senior had just pulled off the gymnastics performance of her high school career, winning Central Region and Capital District gymnast of the year distinction and Central Region and Capital District tournament all-around honors at the combined district-regional meet at Hanover High School.

  Atlee won the Central Region and Capital District team championships. Deep Run won the Colonial District championship and finished second in the region standings. Atlee and Deep Run will compete at the state Group AAA tournament next week at Osbourn Park High School in Manassas.

  MacKay won her region crown despite the fact that she did not win a regional title in any of the four events — bars, beam, floor, and vault. But her solid work in all four events, which included Capital District titles in the beam and vault, catapulted her above the competition.

  “It hasn’t sunk in completely — I’m so just like, wow!” MacKay said. “I came into this meet just wanting to hit all four routines. It’s my last meet, so I wanted to go out with a bang.”

  She said the victory surprised her, however. “The fact that I was able to win, I was not expecting that,” MacKay said. “That was just more icing on the cake.”

  MacKay faced stiff competition from Lee-Davis’ Hannah Chenault, who finished just three-tenths of a percentage point behind her in the overall score.

MacKay’s teammate, Cameron Overstreet, finished third. MacKay’s sister, Brianna, finished fourth, and Emily Maynard of Mills Godwin was fifth.

  Maynard won Colonial District gymnast of the year honors and Colonial District tournament all-around honors.

  “I was going to do my best and try hard,” Maynard said. “And just have fun.”
  Maynard won the regional title in the vault and Colonial district titles in the bars and vault.

  Chenault won Central Region and Capital District titles in the bars. Stewart won Central Region and Colonial District titles in the beam. Brianna MacKay won Central Region and Capital District honors in floor performance. Chelsea Wiggins of Mills Godwin won the Colonial floor performance title. Douglas Freeman coach Sharon Kelley won Central Region and Colonial District coach of the year honors. Varina’s Gretchen Hiort won Capital District coach of the year.

  For Atlee coach Donna Koehler, it was an “awesome” day. “It was a really great win for so many of these girls, mainly because it was supposed to be a really, really tight meet,” Koehler said.

  “Our girls just came out with a bang and did their best.” Koehler had a lot of praise for Jaime MacKay.

  “Jaime MacKay, she deserved what she got today,” Koehler said. “She probably works harder than any child that I’ve ever met in my life. She never gives up. She won’t go home until she’s completed her tasks for the day.”

  Deep Run coach Karen Wright has been pleased with Deep Run’s progress in regional competition. “I’ve been with Deep Run since the beginning,” Wright said. “To see us barely getting 100 [points] to almost getting 140 has just been fantastic.”
