The Lee-Davis wrestling team used three first-place finishes and seven second- and third-place performances to capture the Capital District title on Saturday night at Atlee High School.

The Confederates edged defending district and Central Region champion Hanover 206.5-203.

Colin Van Allen (126 pounds), Tyler Wooten (113) and Adam Stokes (160) captured gold for Lee-Davis.

“For these guys to step up and make this kind of performance is really good,” said Confederates coach Josh Tyler. “Winning this with only 12 guys is really nice.”

Lee-Davis, which finished fourth in the Capital during the regular season, doesn’t have a 220-pounder or a heavyweight on its roster.

Hanover coach Aaron Bradley, a two-time state champion wrestler at Lee-Davis, congratulated the Confederates’ effort.

“They were getting points at every turn,” Bradley said. “Add those all up together and that made them the champions today.”

Chris Morris brought home points for Lee-Davis with a second-place finish. He was defeated 7-3 by the Hawks’ J.D. Gregory in the 106-pound final.

Sawyer Barksdale (120), Randy Loving (170) and Taylor Campbell (182) also placed second for Lee-Davis.

“I knew it was only a matter of time before it clicked,” Tyler said. “The guys did what they needed to do and I was very proud of their performance.”

Loving lost a well-fought 6-2 decision to defending state champion Tanner Tinsley, who is enjoying a very successful season after missing much of last year’s regular season recovering from a dirt bike accident.

Tinsley acknowledged that it was tough for his team to lose in team points, but focused on a very strong showing from the Hawks who made finals.

“We had a lot of champs, we had a lot of kids in the finals,” he said.

“We won six out of seven (finals),” Bradley said. “Our top guys did their jobs.”

Atop the podium alongside Tinsley and Gregory were Michael Flora (120), Michael Engels (145), Patrick Sorey (195) and Henry Reeves (220).

Hanover heavyweight Zach Erb lost to Atlee’s Mario Ramirez in the championship. Ramirez registered a pin in 3:00.

The Raiders finished third with 176 points and three champions.

Joining Ramirez in the winner’s circle were Atlee’s 132-pounder Justin Woolard and 182-pounder Isaac Mackey.

Woolard scored a pin in 1:37 against Varina’s Jason Cecil. Mackey posted a 9-0 major decision over Lee-Davis’ Campbell.

Lee-Davis will send 10 wrestlers to next week’s Central Region tournament at Hanover. The Hawks will have 11 representatives and Atlee will have 10.

Varina and Glen Allen each advanced seven wrestlers. Highland Springs will sends five, Armstrong four and Henrico two.
