No. 4 Varina barely escapes Lee-Davis in OT


McDaniel comes through with two kicks in the clutch

Cody McDaniel connected on a 27-yard field goal with 1 second left in the fourth quarter to tie the game, and made the extra point kick in overtime to lift Varina, No. 4 in the T-D 10 Poll, to a 25-24 victory over Lee-Davis on Friday night.

The Confederates (0-1 Capital, 2-2) took charge early. Tucker Walton ran for a 53-yard touchdown, and quarterback Phillip Gardner connected with Chance Stone for a 31-yard score.

The Blue Devils (1-0, 3-1) answered in the second on a 1-yard scoring run by Herman Norrell, and Trey Johnson ran for a 25-yard TD in the third to tie the game at 15.

A 23-yard field goal by Will Castelvecchi put Lee- Davis up three with about 7 minutes remaining, literally up until the last second. Brandon Angus scored on a 10-yard pass from Gardner, but the run attempt failed. Varina’s Johnson ran in a 1-yard touchdown, and McDaniel’s kick sealed the win.

Johnson finished with 25 carries for 229 yards and two TDs for the Blue Devils. Norrell was 8 for 17 for 95 yards and an interception, and also carried five times for minus 11 yards and a touchdown.

Gardner was 20 of 30 for 238 yards, two TDs and one interception for Lee-Davis. Walton rushed 11 times for 64 yards and a score. He also had one catch for 14 yards.
