Strong performances by several Lady Raiders propelled Atlee to a top-three sweep at All Smiles Gymnastics last Wednesday, taking all four events as well as the all-around title.
All Smiles, owned and operated by Atlee coach Donna Koehler, also serves as home to Patrick Henry, who hosted the competition for visiting Hanover, Varina and Goochland High Schools.
Raider sophomore Cameron Overstreet mastered the balance beam (9.2) and vault (9.3) events on the way to the all-around win, with fellow Raiders Caitlin Donahue and Jaimee Mackay taking second and third.
Atlee’s Brianna Mackay and Jessica Nunnally excelled on the uneven bars, each scoring 9.2 for a blue-ribbon tie. Donahue took the floor competition with a 9.5 routine that included passes with perfectly executed hands-free somersaults.
“We’ve got a dynamic team this year,” Koehler said. “We have about eight really tough all-arounds. It’s great to be around them and be their coach.”
Atlee finished first with 144.85 points.
First-year Patrick Henry coach Susan Severin, a member of the Patriots’ Class of 2000, leads a young squad of eight tumblers with the help of assistant Debbie Allgood. They were pleased with the overall outcome of the event.
“I think the girls did extremely well under the conditions,” Severin said. “This was their first home meet this year, and we’ve had to deal with some injuries.”
Severin had projected Haley Sellers, as a top all-around gymnast for this year, but she hurt her knee before the season started and was unable to participate. Ashton Blunt nurses a twisted ankle, and all-arounder Suraya Bradshaw has a sore back.
Lizzie Powell led the Patriots in all four events and nailed her floor routine for a 9.0. She took fourth overall in the competition.
“Lizzie is consistently good. We can rely on her to pump out good scores every single time,” Severin said.
Powell’s status as an accomplished pole-vaulter explains the speed and superior arm strength that powered her through an impressive vault routine, where she earned a team-best 8.3.
“She will go to the Olympics for pole-vaulting,” Severin added. “She’s amazing.”
Bradshaw had an impressive layout-position vault that earned an 8.1.
She also had a strong effort going on the balance beam a few minutes later that nearly ended early when she took a hard fall that aggravated an already-sore back. After gathering herself for a few seconds, Bradshaw remounted to complete her routine and stuck the landing for a 7.65 score.
“Our team has a lot of heart,” Severin said. “Everyone tries so hard.”
Patrick Henry finished second with 118.15 points.
Hanover finished less than three points behind the Patriots with a 115.5. Hannah Andrzejewski highlighted the Hawks with team-best results in bars, vault and floor, where her “I Love Rock & Roll” routine earned a 9.2. Fellow freshman Julie Palmer led Hanover with a strong performance on the balance beam.
The attitude and teamwork of her young squad pleases Hanover coach Jessica Moore.
“We had fun tonight,” Moore said. “I think they did exceptionally well – we had some of the highest scores we’ve had so far. The team is very young, and they’re learning that it’s a little more intense coming from middle school to high school, but they’re having fun with it. They don’t stress over the little things and always do what they can to have a good time.”
