On a sunny Saturday afternoon at St. Catherine’s pristine Kenny Center there was a standing room crowd for the duration of the 24 event dual meet between Atlee, Collegiate, Hanover and St. Anne’s-Belfield School. Athleticism and school spirit prevailed as swimmers churned up and down the lanes, racing the clock and one another in the well-organized competition.
In the end, the results were the same in both boys and girls competition with Collegiate defeating all comers while Atlee won over both Hanover and STAB. Both Hawks teams defeated STAB.
For swim coaches it is a balancing act when it comes to spreading out swimmers to cover the day’s events. Coach’s do not want to over-extend their swimmers by competing in too many events, nor do they want the events too close together, to allow for recovery time. But, as it is not a perfect world when it comes to competition there are times when swimmers have to gird their loins and get right back in the fray.
Such was the case with several swimmers including Atlee’s Kaitlin Schroeder who was the first to break the ice with a win among the two competing Hanover County teams. Schroeder had just placed third swimming the Fly in the 200 Medley Relay with teammates Kristen Meeker, Noey Staib and Sarah DeCourcey, when minutes later she was back in the water to take first in the 200 Free, touching the wall at 1:58.98.
Schroeder went on to place first again in the girls 500 Free, logging in 5:12.77 and finished the day with a third place finish in the 400 Free Relay along with teammates, Staib, Meeker and Brittany Carter.
Staib, placed in all four of her events, taking first in the 100 Breast while , in addition to her medley races, freshman Meeker, took sixth in the 100 Back and second in the 200 IM, knocking off more than nine seconds for a personal best time of 2:30.53.
“We got some really good times and best times,” said Atlee head coach Karen Seever. “They did a really nice job. Some of our swimmers were also swimming a USS meet this morning, swimming a mile, so we came off that meet this morning to be in this one this afternoon, so we’ve got a lot of tired swimmers.”
In a year of rebuilding, the Hanover girls continue to show great improvement. Chelsea Tillar, Hannah Meeks, Charlotte Kennedy and Lindsay Pierce took second in the 200 Medley Relay. Tillar, a sophomore, had a banner day, also placing second in the 50 Free and 100 Free, capping off the day with a win in the 400 Free Relay along with junior teammates Meeks, Peyton Kremer and Pierce. Pierce also took second and third in the 100 Fly and 100 Back respectively. Meeks took fifth in the 200 Free, sixth in the 100 Fly.

Hanover Coach Ann Rammage said she expects even better performances in two weeks at the Regionals. “Right now before Regionals, it’s very difficult to qualify for States. We had one person, Lindsey Pierce, qualify for backstroke at Kecoughtan, but we’re expecting at Regionals to have a number qualify. Taylor Healy did a great job. We asked her to really come out and she did the 500 for us, and then to turn around and do the hundred breast stroke, to put her under the gun. We said, we really want you to beat this girl from Atlee, and she did. She did great.” Healy, a sophomore, did her personal best in that race, placing fifth and knocking down her time by over a second.
Among the top swimmers for Atlee boys, Sidney Glass, coming off the USS competition earlier in the day, still managed to take first in the 100 Back with 54:39. Glass also placed second in the 200 Medley Relay, the 200 IM and the 200 Freestyle Relay.
“I swam a mile this morning and that was dreadful,” he said. “There’s a lot of stiff competition here. Collegiate is stacked. I mean they have Olympic trials guys. Mac Anthony and Thomas Stevens are swimming top in the Nation.”
Glass expects to see fellow senior, Adam Carter join him at the State meet. “If [Carter] hasn’t gotten into the 200 Free, he’ll get in at Regionals,” Glass said. Besides swiming in the 200 Free and 200 Medley Relays, Carter also took second in the 100 Fly and first in the 200 Free with a time of 1:49:02.
As the days draw closer the Regionals (Feb. 7 at NOVA), Glass is getting himself pumped up. “There was a lot of stiff competition today but I think we held up strong,” he said. “We have the Maggie Walker meet next week which is a big competition. Their guys are just as good as Collegiate’s guys, so that’s going to be a tough meet for us. We’ll keep practicing and start getting excited. Getting our whole team ready for Regionals.”
Atlee freshman, Austin Glass, Sidney’s brother, swam strong, placing fourth in the 100 Fly and 100 Back events, as well as fifth and third in 200 Medley Relay and 400 Free Relay.
Coach Rammage also likes what she has seen from Patrick Black and Curran Henry. Black placed fourth in both the 50 and 100 Freestyle, as well as taking third in the 200 Free Relay with teammates Will Henry, Ben Tillar, and Curran Henry.

Overall Rammage was pleased with her teams showing. “The girls in the 400 medley did exceedingly well, much better than we really were thinking they would do, so we’re really impressed with that. They are making great improvements overall. Other than that, we are looking forward to next week to Lee-Davis. It should be a really close meet both for the boys and girls. This week was hard because we were headed into exams. We stress academics come first no matter what, and they’ve gotta make sure that they’re doing well in school, so I don’t require anything from them during this time. But now we’ve got two weeks to Regionals, two weeks where we can have people qualify for States. They’ve gotta step it up.
