HAMPDEN-SYDNEY — Heads-up play on defense and consistent offensive pressure produced a 28-14 Hampden-Sydney victory over Bridgewater College at Everett Stadium on Saturday.

Senior wide receiver Kyle Vance (three receptions, 96 yards) hauled in a 51-yard scoring pass, and senior running back Kirk Rohle (16 carries, 134 yards) scored the opening and closing touchdowns.

“He’s an animal,” freshman safety John Moore said of Rohle, a senior from Hanover High School. “Our offensive line is great, too. They open up big holes for him.”

“The offense made me look like a superstar today,” Rohle said. “They did a great job and I’m really proud of them.”

Quarterback Travis Lane (Mills Godwin) finished 22 of 32 for 215 yards and two TDs for H-SC.

Center Ben Rogers, a senior who was Rohle’s high school teammate, directed credit to the defense.

“It’s a lot easier to play offense when you’ve got a good defense,” he said. “They always step up in big situations when the game is on the line.”

Moore, a former standout at Blessed Sacrament Huguenot, was one such defender who came up big on Saturday for Hampden-Sydney (5-1, 2-0 Old Dominion Athletic Conference).

The Tigers led 14-7 when the third quarter expired, but Bridgewater (3-2, 0-1) was in the midst of a six-play, 25-yard drive that included a 16-yard reception by Cord Keating.

On the second play of the fourth quarter, Moore picked off Bridgewater’s Carlos Gonzalez as he scrambled.

“I locked on and the ball came right in my direction,” said Moore of the interception he returned 10 yards. “I think that definitely helped our momentum.”

That it did. Moore’s pick led to a four-play, 45-yard H-SC drive that ended with a 3-yard TD run by Eric Gorsline.

“We love Johnny Moore,” said Tigers’ head coach Marty Favret. “He’s a freshman, but he plays a lot older than that and he’s got great ball skills.”

Another of the defense’s pivotal stands occurred late in the first half.

With 2:21 left in the half, the Eagles were working a six-play, 68-yard march to the H-SC 12, but the drive died on a fumble in the end zone.

On the seventh snap of the drive, Bridgewater’s Gonzalez (21 of 38 for 205 yards) hooked up with Cliff Woodard for 11 yards, but Tigers sophomore safety Charlie Shoemaker forced a fumble in the end zone and senior linebacker August Berling (Benedictine) smothered it for a touchback, sending the homecoming crowd of 7,239 into a frenzy.

The Tigers got possession on the 20-yard line and ran out the half.

THANKS FOR COVERAGE OF HAMPDEN-SYDNEY FOOTBALL AND ESPECIALLY BEN ROGERS AND KIRK ROHLE. BEN AND KIRK HAVE PLAYED FOOTBALL TOGETHER SINCE THE AGE OF FIVE. THEY STARTED WITH BLUE STAR, OAK KNOLL, HANOVER AND NOW HAMPDEN SYDNEY COLLEGE. ONE MORE UNIQUE THING IS THEY STILL PLAY THE SAME POSITION FOR 17 YEARS. BEN IS THE CENTER AND KIRK IS THE TAILBACK. THAT STAT MIGHT BE ONE IN A MILLION.
