Most people who think of Ultimate Fighting and mixed martial arts do not think of Mechanicsville, Virginia.  This may soon change as Josh Tyler, a Mechanicsville local resident, recently became the 155 pound light weight champion of the Gladiator Fight Club, Virginia’s premier mixed martial arts organization for amateur fighters.  The title fight was held on October 17, 2009, in Winchester, Virginia.  Josh fought three grueling five-minute rounds to emerge victorious against his opponent bringing his current amateur record to 4 – 0.  Although it was a split decision, Josh was able to dominate the fight pushing the pace with strong take downs in addition to ground and pound technique.

Growing up in Mechanicsville, Josh was an all star athlete on the Lee-Davis High School wrestling team and then moved on to Old Dominion University where he successfully wrestled four years at the collegiate level.  Currently, he is training six days a week at Mechanicsville Martial Arts and Mike’s Olympic Gym.  During wrestling season at Stonewall Jackson Middle School you can find Josh doing some coaching of his own.

Josh will be defending his title on October 30 in the Dominican Republic in a highly anticipated rematch against the very same fighter from whom he won the title.  “I see this match as an opportunity for self improvement,” he said, “I beat him before and I know I can do it again stronger and faster.”

As 2010 approaches, Josh Tyler will be participating in more amateur fights before his goal of a pro debut in summer of 2010.  He may even push for a spot on Spike TV’s, “The Ultimate Fighter” reality show.  Head instructors Mike Crawford and Klint Radwani, of Mechanicsville Martial Arts believe in Josh’s potential.  “The path to becoming a professional fighter is tough but Josh is one of the most athletic and coachable students we have ever had and we believe he has the heart to do it.”
