Hawks soars among Atlee vaulters

When Atlee traveled to Lee-Davis for a Polar Bear meet this past weekend, the Raiders sent a split team because the squad was also invited to a meet in Maryland.

  However, with no pole-vaulting events scheduled in Maryland, two of the state’s top vaulters made the trip to Lee-Davis instead.

  Rachel Hawks and Emma Dejarnette are two of the best females at the sport, with Hawks chasing Dejarnette for the top spot statewide.

  At Lee-Davis, both cleared 10 feet, with Hawks getting the win.

Hawks, Confederates place in James River Duals

The expectations for this year’s James River Duals were that some of the best matches of the year would be played out on the wrestling mat. The meet did not disappoint as several teams went 4-0 in pool competition Friday and battled for the top spots in Saturday’s championship rounds. When all was said and done, Hanover pulled out a fourth-place finish while Lee-Davis earned 12th. James River earned the championship.

Conrad family gets a kick out of karate

  For the Conrad family, karate is a group venture. Al Conrad, his daughter Tasha and son Teo entered into the world of martial arts five years ago and have since taken it by storm, winning a combined 13 national championships in a mere three years of competition.

  For Al Conrad, the father of the clan, the recent venture into the world of karate was nothing new. His passion for the sport actually began 26 years ago.

Prillaman is right for Raiders

Last summer, when Atlee High School went in search of a new head coach for their girls’ basketball program there were many avenues that the school could have taken. Hiring Anna Prillaman, a young woman with no head coaching experience was probably one of the least expected.

  Under previous head coach Curt Kassab, the Raiders had proven to be one of the region’s dominant programs. Therefore, the role of his successor was a position that was not without interest from head coaches throughout Virginia.

Raiders claim revenge and crown from Bird

Long before a single game was played this season, the Atlee Lady Raiders placed a bulls eye on one particular team; L.C. Bird. After suffering a 60-30 humiliation at the hands of the Skyhawks in the championship game of the Times-Dispatch Invitational last year, Atlee wanted nothing more than to get a second shot. The problem was, Bird was not on their schedule. So the Raiders hoped they would be given an early Christmas present in the form of a rematch with the Skyhawks in this year’s TDIT.

Springers muscle way past No. 1 Cadets

Teams of the Capitol District take notice, Highland Springs is out to muscle its way to yet another title.

  The championship game of the Times-Dispatch Tournament declared the announcement loudly when the physical Springers knocked off No. 1 ranked Benedictine 53-51.

Coach puts district chips on the table

When it comes to Capital District swimming, this could be Hanover’s year. Entering its fifth year, the 2007-08 team seems certain to garner headlines both locally and on the national stage.

  The Hanover squad gathered at Burkwood recently for their second meet of the season, a non-district matchup against Goochland. The Hawks did not disappoint expectations by capturing a victory over the visiting Bulldogs.
