Emporia native Elliott Sadler and Chesterfield’s Denny Hamlin both brought home victories for the Commonwealth this weekend at Phoenix International Raceway.
Elliott Sadler captured his first NASCAR Nationwide Series victory since 1998 on Saturday afternoon in the Bashas’ Supermarkets 200. The win marked Sadler’s first career win at PIR and ended a 13-season winless drought. The win gave Sadler a 10-point lead in the Nationwide Series points standings over second-place Austin Dillon.

NASCAR’s return to town may still be a few months away but Richmond International Raceway is revving up the celebration early. This year, RIR enters its 60th anniversary of NASCAR racing and the track wants to make it a season to remember.
“Sixty years of NASCAR at RIR is a bid deal,” said track president Dennis Bickmeier. It’s a milestone year.”

Proving that good things do happen on Friday the 13th, Richmond International Raceway fans may purchase tickets to the Saturday, April 28, Richmond 400 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race this Friday, January 13, at 9:00 a.m. ET. The race marks the return of NASCAR to Richmond International Raceway for the first time since last September’s Wonderful Pistachios 400 – one of the most exciting races of the 2011 season.

A month has passed since new Richmond International Raceway President Dennis Bickmeier experienced his first NASCAR weekend at RIR, but there has been little slowing down since. Even though the Wonderful Pistachios 400 marked the final race of RIR’s 2011 season, Bickmeier has kept busy getting to know the community and ramping up plans for next year.
