Ryan Long, a sophomore a shot, disc and javelin thrower at Hanover High School, applied to the Nike Youth Leadership Camp occurring at Tracktown USA in Portland, Oregon during this year’s Olympic Trials. At the end of March Long found out that he was accepted as one of 100 teens to go to the Leadership camp. There will be fifty kids one week and fifty the next.
To be chosen Long had to fill out the application and write an essay on his definition of leadership.
The 11U Virginia Blaze, out of Mechanicsville, won the April Fools Day Tournament held at Atlee Little league on April 1. The team used a complete team effort to go undefeated on the day to win their first tournament of 2012. Way to go guys!
The 2012 Upward Hanover Basketball season came to end on Saturday, March 17 with an exciting tournament in the 6th-8th grade division, reminiscent of March Madness. Ben Weichman and Ryan Furr led the scoring for the Clippers. Mitchell Goodman and Jalen Hargrove also contributed in the scoring column.
J.D. Gregory freshman (above right) from Hanover HS placed 4th out of 86 entries in the NHSCA Freshman Nationals 106 lb division. Bishop Guempel (above left) also of Hanover HS traveled to Canton, Ohio to compete in the Viper Pit Tournament were he finished 3rd in the 160lb weight class.
Premier Olympic Gymnastics Academy (POGA) is gearing up for State Gymnastics meets with all levels having put forth a strong showing at Ocean Tumbler’s Shamrock Invitational on March 10-11. With a total of 43 top five placements and three team trophies, Coaches Jason Mabery and Melvin Sanchez feel their team is peaking at the right time and expect to continue POGA’S history of producing state champion athletes and state winning teams.
On Saturday Mar., 31, the Hanover softball coaching staff, varsity players, and junior varsity players will conduct a three hour clinic covering hitting, fielding, throwing, base running, pitching, and more from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Atlee Little League complex for youth ages 7-14 (up to and including 8th graders).
Youth will be divided by age and skill to receive the most appropriate instruction. The cost for this three hour clinic is $35.
